Acid Reflux - GERD and Asthma
When stomach acid rises up your esophagus (gullet), a prozess called gastro-oesophageal reflux
disease, or, more generally acid reflux can happen. That is what current Studies show that asthma symptoms can get more intense when suffering
from GERD and asthma.
GERD and asthma together can lead to aching heartburn which you can improve with antacid medicines. Antacid is a
special type of medicines used to neutralise the acid. Acid reflux often occurs in older and corpulent people. But it also can happen in
children and in all sort of people.
Some researchers have artificially added acid into the gullets of people that suffer from asthma, and it had a
profound effect on their asthma and gave reason to worse asthma symptoms.
It also very likely that the big pressure changes in the chest of the asthma patients when breathing forces the
liquid to go up the wrong way in the oesophagus. This leads to believe that asthmatic people suffer from GERD and asthma more frequently than
people without it.
Unfortunately the assumption that the successful treatment of GERD will improve the asthma is wrong.
On the other side if the results are positive the treatment of your stomach could improve your lungs. If there is no obvious reason for your
asthma is getting worse, you should nevertheless check with your doctor to find out whether you suffer from GERD.
Test to measure the acidity in the esophagus can show a tendency for acid reflux. If you have GERD and
asthma the careful treatment of acid reflux can make your breathing more effortless.
